More about the After School Program
Learning through the joy of reading
At Bright Steps, reading is more than a subject — it’s a daily habit that opens every door to learning.
Children choose books they love, read at their own pace, and discover the quiet pleasure of getting lost in stories — no tests, no reports, just genuine curiosity.
This research-backed practice, known as free voluntary reading, helps children grow into lifelong readers who learn because they love to.
How we do it
-
Choice is key – Kids pick what excites them—graphic novels, mysteries, science, because engaged readers grow stronger.
-
No pressure, all pleasure – No quizzes or reports; when reading feels fun, kids naturally want more.
-
Gentle guidance – Teachers open doors to new genres and authors while honoring each child’s pace and interests.
Learning How to Learn through Math
At Bright Steps, math is more than solving problems—it’s where children practice how to learn. That’s why we use Beast Academy online platform not just as a math program, but as a space where children build lifelong habits of curiosity, persistence, and reflection.
How We Use Beast Academy at Bright Steps
-
Challenge with Support – We design learning in the “just-right challenge zone,” guiding students to break problems into steps, try again, and treat mistakes as growth.
-
Collaboration and Communication – Math is social. Children tackle puzzles together, explaining their thinking, comparing strategies, and learning how to listen and build on others’ ideas. In these moments, confidence grows naturally—through voice and teamwork, not memorization.
-
Independent Learning – Our blended approach nurtures independence. Using Beast Academy’s online platform, students explore at their own pace, while teachers coach them to track progress, manage time, and reflect on what strategies help them learn best.
When kids understand how they learn, they grow into confident, flexible thinkers—ready for anything ahead.
Social Emotional Learning
What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?
SEL is emotional intelligence for kids—teaching them to understand themselves, manage emotions, build friendships, make good decisions, and care for others.
Why SEL Matters
Essential Skills – Kids need empathy, resilience, and confidence as much as math and reading.
Prime learning window – Elementary years are the best time to build these lifelong habits.
Research-backed approach – We follow CASEL's proven framework, trusted by top schools nationwide.
How We Teach and Practice SEL
Daily routines – Reflection circles, role-play, and kindness reminders, and modern manners practice.
Embedded in every class – Even fun workshops like Purple Wand Magic teach "8 Traits of a True Magician" (Respect, Creativity, Giving, and more) so kids practice character alongside skills.
Learning through doing – Through teamwork, projects, and playful challenges, kids turn SEL into real skills they carry into life.
Free Play & Choice Time
What It Is
Beyond structured enrichment, reading, and math, children have time to choose their own play—outdoor games, indoor gym activities, board games, chess, and creative building challenges. This unstructured time brings balance after focused learning, helps kids build real friendships through shared fun, and grows confidence as they make their own choices.
How it works
Rich variety of options – Outdoor play, gym time, board games, chess, and building activities keep kids engaged.
Natural friendship building – Free play sparks real connections through shared games and spontaneous fun.
Guided freedom – Staff support and encourage, while kids lead and grow independence.
Perfect balance – After learning, children relax, socialize, and build confidence through choice.
